The Challenge
Gateway Park fills largely from stormwater run-off and as a result the water contains significant nutrients which can lead to algal blooms.
Our Solution
AKS Industries (SPEL Victoria & Tasmania) worked with The City of Greater Bendigo and has installed a new environmentally friendly SPEL Floating Treatment Wetlands at Kangaroo Flat’s Gateway Park to help improve the lake’s water quality.
This floating treatment wetland is a solution that has been developed for applications ranging from stormwater through to wastewater treatment lagoons, and it has proven highly successful.
The roots of the plants provide a large compression of the treatment surface area required, this means we can solve challenges like this one cost-effectively.
SPEL floating treatment wetland is superior to other options as it involves no civil works onsite and was simply deployed from the edge.
The system was initially bird-netted to ensure that the plants were established, the bird-netting was removed after 6 months and it has been flourishing since.
